A coalition of APC support groups from the North-East subregion has declared its support for Yakubu Dogara, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the upcoming 2027 general elections. This announcement came during a gathering in Gombe, where coalition members emphasized Dogara’s suitability for the role.
Following the meeting, the coalition announced plans to send a delegation to Abuja to formally present their decision to President Tinubu. They believe that Dogara stands out as the best candidate for the Vice Presidency from the North-East, citing his political pedigree and broad acceptability across various demographic segments.
The coalition underscored that Dogara’s leadership qualities and commitment to unity, political representation, and religious harmony make him the most qualified choice. They pointed out that at a time when Nigeria is focused on building a better future, Dogara can effectively contribute to these efforts.
This endorsement aligns with the support that different APC organs have expressed for Tinubu to seek a second term in office in 2027. Reports indicate that he has been given an automatic ticket, although some party members have raised concerns about his approval ratings in parts of the country.
As of now, Yakubu Dogara has not publicly declared any intent to run for office in the 2027 elections. However, the coalition’s backing may suggest a strategic positioning as discussions around the APC’s ticket develop.
The endorsement comes amid speculation that Tinubu may consider altering his ticket to include a Christian running mate, potentially to enhance appeal among voters. While current Vice President Kashim Shettima is from the North-East and is a Muslim, the coalition believes that a shift could strengthen the party’s chances in the election.
As the political landscape evolves, the coalition’s support for Yakubu Dogara highlights the APC’s ongoing efforts to solidify its strategy for the 2027 elections, aiming for unity and broader representation within the party.
