Human rights activist Ann-Kio Briggs has strongly criticized Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the sole administrator appointed by the Federal Government in Rivers State. In a recent interview, she accused Ibas of increasing tensions in the region through unconstitutional actions and disregard for court orders. Here are the main points from her statements:

Briggs emphasized that Ibas has ignored court rulings while restructuring state and local government institutions, which she contends is creating a volatile environment in Rivers State. She also accused Ibas of political bias, suggesting that his appointments favor certain individuals, particularly those associated with former Governor Nyesom Wike. Briggs stated, “The people being removed are not Wike’s people. The people he is bringing in are Wike’s people.”

She questioned Ibas’s authority to make significant appointments, noting that he is not from Rivers State and lacks the legitimacy to make decisions about local governance.

Briggs called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the federal government’s intervention in Rivers State, arguing that there is no significant insecurity that justifies such drastic measures. She believes the president has been misled by individuals with vested interests in the state.

As tensions escalate, Briggs warned of the possibility of civil unrest among the people of Rivers State, stating, “This kind of situation can explode.” She urged for the involvement of neutral figures in peacebuilding efforts, suggesting respected individuals like Bishop Matthew Kukah and General Abdulsalami Abubakar could help restore stability.

In summary, Briggs’s comments reflect serious concerns about the political situation in Rivers State under Ibas’s administration, highlighting issues of legality, bias, and the potential for unrest.
