Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), has passed away.

Justice Muhammad reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

A senior source confirmed the development, stating, “Ex-CJN Tanko Muhammad is dead. He passed away this morning at a Saudi Arabian hospital,” putting to rest speculations surrounding his health.

The Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS), National Headquarters, Abuja, also confirmed his death in an official condolence message dated December 16, 2025. The association described his passing as a monumental loss to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, and the nation at large.

In its statement titled “NAMLAS Condolence Message on the Passing of Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, GCON, Former Chief Justice of Nigeria,” the body praised the late jurist for his integrity, humility, and commitment to justice.

According to NAMLAS, Justice Muhammad’s tenure on the Bench was guided by fairness, restraint, and unwavering respect for the rule of law, noting that his legacy would continue to influence future generations of legal practitioners.

The association also highlighted his mentorship role, particularly to young Muslim law students, describing him as approachable, supportive, and fatherly in guidance.

Condolences were extended to his family, the Nigerian judiciary, the government, and the Muslim Ummah, with prayers offered for Allah’s forgiveness and mercy upon his soul.
