Suspected bandits have attacked a church in Omugo community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, abducting several worshippers during a Sunday service.

The incident occurred at an ECWA Church, throwing the area into panic as gunmen stormed the premises and took away victims.

Security operatives, however, responded swiftly and rescued three of those abducted, while efforts continue to secure the release of others still in captivity.

A local source said at least seven persons were initially taken before security forces intervened.

Confirming the development, the state Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, commended the joint efforts of security agencies, forest guards, and local vigilantes for repelling the attackers and rescuing some victims.

She added that a manhunt is ongoing to track down the perpetrators and ensure the safe return of the remaining abductees.

The state government condemned the attack, describing the targeting of a place of worship as unacceptable, and urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies with useful information.

Authorities also noted that ongoing forest operations have helped reduce criminal activities in parts of the state, even as security has been strengthened following intelligence reports of possible coordinated attacks across Kwara South.
