Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences and a departure from the party’s founding principles. In a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP Jada 1 Ward Chairman in Adamawa State, Atiku stated that he was compelled to leave due to the party’s current trajectory.

The PDP, along with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Deputy National Chairman Bode George, responded swiftly. They asserted that Atiku’s departure would not negatively impact the party’s prospects in the upcoming 2027 elections. Governor Makinde emphasized that politics is a game of interest and that the PDP remains an institution resilient to individual exits.

Atiku’s exit marks the third time he has left the PDP. He previously departed in 2007 to join the defunct Action Congress and again in 2014 to help form the All Progressives Congress (APC). His recent resignation has sparked varying reactions, with some party leaders downplaying its significance and urging a focus on pressing national issues like hunger and economic hardship.

Bode George criticized Atiku, suggesting that his actions reveal a self-serving nature and advising him to retire from politics.
