Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has come under criticism from the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) for his recent call for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The DWI argues that such a statement could undermine confidence in the rule of law and convey a troubling message about accountability.

In a statement, DWI’s Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, expressed concerns that Atiku’s comments appeared inconsistent with his advocacy for justice and national unity. He emphasized that Kanu faces serious charges, including terrorism and treasonable felony, and that the legal process should be allowed to unfold without external pressure.

Dr. Bamidele stated, “By calling for Kanu’s unconditional release, there is a risk of undermining the judicial process and the efforts of those working to maintain peace and security.” He further urged political leaders to exercise caution in their public statements regarding ongoing legal matters to preserve respect for judicial institutions and maintain public trust.

The DWI reiterated that justice should not be politicized and called for a focus on due process and national stability in discussions surrounding Kanu’s trial.
