Prominent Nigerian political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Wednesday led a mass protest to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

Other notable participants included David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, as a large crowd of demonstrators gathered to demand electoral accountability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The protest, which took place despite steady rainfall, drew participants from across political parties and civic groups. What reportedly began as a demonstration linked to a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) evolved into a broader coalition movement focused on concerns over the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.

Protesters initially converged at the residence of David Mark, where a brief gathering was held, before proceeding in a coordinated march towards the INEC headquarters. The crowd expanded along major roads in the Federal Capital Territory as more supporters joined.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the turnout reflected widespread concern cutting across political affiliations, with participants travelling from different parts of the country.

The protest had earlier been scheduled for the previous week but was postponed following heavy security deployment. However, Wednesday’s demonstration appeared to proceed with little prior notice, suggesting a change in strategy.

Despite the size and intensity of the gathering, the protest remained largely orderly, with participants maintaining a peaceful march while expressing dissatisfaction with the electoral system.
