Former Vice President and presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed regret over his role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2014, stating that Nigeria’s condition has deteriorated further under the party’s leadership.

Atiku said he joined other political figures at the time to form the APC in a bid to address what they believed were shortcomings in the country’s democratic process and governance.

“I regret being among those who helped form the APC in 2014 to remove Goodluck Jonathan from office. Today, the situation has become even worse under the present administration,” he said.

Reflecting on the events that led to the coalition, Atiku noted that the alliance was built on concerns over insecurity and economic challenges.

“We came together and formed the APC because we felt democracy was faulty in 2014,” he said, adding that the major issues at the time included insecurity and economic instability.

According to him, rather than witnessing improvement, the country is now grappling with even more severe challenges.

“Only for us to end up at the same position we found ourselves in 2014. In 2014, the major challenges were insecurity and the economy. Now it is even worse than what we fought in 2014,” he stated.

Atiku called for renewed efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and governance, urging political stakeholders to prioritise restoring what he described as “true democracy” in the country.
