The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria, demanding action on several unresolved issues affecting the university system. This decision was made during a National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja.

In a statement released by ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the union expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s neglect of the university system and its consistent failure to address their demands. The ultimatum requires the government to respond within two weeks, failing which ASUU may initiate a two-week warning strike, followed by a total and indefinite strike.

ASUU’s core demands include:

  • Renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between the union and the government.
  • Adequate revitalization funds for universities.
  • Settlement of outstanding salary arrears.
  • Sustainable funding mechanisms for higher education.

The Federal Government had previously established a committee, led by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, to address ASUU’s concerns. However, as of the time of this report, no decisions have been publicly communicated.

The union’s ultimatum underscores ongoing tensions between ASUU and the government, highlighting the urgent need for resolution to avoid further disruption in the academic calendar.
