The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has announced its withdrawal from the local government elections scheduled for February 22, following a recent Court of Appeal judgment that reinstated its chairmen and councillors.
In a letter dated February 17, signed by APC State Publicity Secretary Alao Kamorudeen, the party stated that the court ruling rendered the election unnecessary, as the previously sacked officials were reinstated and their positions were no longer vacant.
The letter emphasized that the February 10 judgment from the Court of Appeal nullified a prior Federal High Court decision, allowing the APC’s elected officials to resume their roles. The APC’s withdrawal follows a period of tension and conflict with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the interpretation of the court’s ruling, which has led to violent clashes and multiple casualties.
The situation escalated recently, with both parties claiming rights to local government secretariats across the state, resulting in significant unrest. The APC’s decision to withdraw from the elections aims to avoid further conflict as it asserts the legality of its reinstated officials.
