As the 2027 general election approaches, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC) have outlined their expectations for the incoming chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Key themes include credibility, neutrality, and a commitment to democratic principles.
In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, the APC emphasized the need for the new INEC chairman to ensure a fair playing field for all political parties. The party’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, stressed that their interest lies in winning elections within a free and fair atmosphere, stating, “Our interest is in how to stand for elections and be allowed to play without being muzzled or ruled out.”
The PDP echoed similar sentiments, with National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba calling for a chairman of integrity who can operate independently and impartially. He urged President Bola Tinubu and relevant stakeholders to thoroughly assess candidates before making an appointment.
The ADC warned that failing to conduct credible elections under the new leadership could endanger the country’s democratic stability. Bolaji Abdulahi, the coalition party’s National Publicity Secretary, highlighted the ongoing crisis of credibility within INEC and stressed the importance of restoring public trust.
As the current INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, prepares to complete his tenure in November, the pressure mounts on the government to appoint a successor who meets the democratic expectations of all parties involved.
