The All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently conducting its local government chairmanship primaries at the party’s secretariat in Ikeja, Lagos, ahead of the scheduled July 12 elections into the state’s 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas.
Security is visibly tight at the venue, with a significant deployment of police officers, personnel from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS). Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh, was seen personally overseeing the security situation.
Traffic along ACME Road and its environs has been heavily affected due to roadblocks and restrictions around the venue. Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) are managing the resulting gridlock, which has forced commuters to take alternate routes.
Delegates from various council areas are undergoing accreditation, with hundreds already present. Speaking to the press before the process began, APC Electoral Committee Chairman, Babatunde Ogala, stressed the importance of fairness and transparency. He noted the delay in accreditation was to accommodate delegates arriving from distant locations.
Ogala also urged the media to report objectively and confirmed that the committee had taken all necessary steps to ensure a smooth and secure primary process.
