A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has called for the resignation of the Minister of Education, Dr Morufu Alausa, over the approval of a junior secondary school history textbook accused of excluding the Igbo ethnic group from Nigeria’s historical narrative.
Eze urged governors in the South-East to reject what he described as a divisive and misleading version of the book titled “Living History for Junior Secondary School 1 Students.”
Reacting to a viral video highlighting the content of the book authored by J.M. Itsekuke, the APC chieftain questioned why any credible account of Nigeria’s history would fail to recognise the Igbo people as one of the country’s major ethnic groups.
He expressed concern that the book had reportedly been listed in the National Library of Nigeria, describing the development as shameful and unacceptable.
Eze accused the Minister of Education of endorsing a publication that promotes ethnic bias and deepens division among Nigerians. He described the book as an attempt to erase the Igbo people from national history and called for its immediate withdrawal from circulation.
He also demanded the arrest and prosecution of the author, alleging that the omission was deliberate and motivated by hatred.
According to him, the education minister has lost the moral authority to remain in office for allowing such material to be approved for use in schools.
Eze further called on South-East governors to rise above politics and take urgent steps to challenge what he described as an attack on the identity and historical relevance of the Igbo ethnic group in Nigeria.
