Residents of Anambra State participated in a sit-at-home protest on Monday, expressing solidarity for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who remains in detention. Despite IPOB’s cancellation of the weekly sit-at-home initiative earlier this year, many residents chose to stay indoors, influenced by ongoing protests in Abuja demanding Kanu’s release.

The sit-at-home, which peaked between 2021 and 2024, saw a resurgence this week as residents cited fears of potential attacks and a desire to support the #FreeNnamdiKanu movement. Observations across major cities, including Onitsha, Nnewi, and Awka, revealed that banks, markets, and schools were closed, with streets largely deserted.

Commissioner of Police for Anambra, CP Ikioye Orutugu, praised the residents for their commitment to peace and assured that security measures were in place to protect law-abiding citizens. He emphasized the need for community policing and collaboration with stakeholders to maintain order.

Local markets, such as Onitsha Main Market and Ochanja Market, were notably inactive, with only a handful of roadside vendors present. Many residents expressed their continued observance of the sit-at-home out of caution against possible violence from hoodlums.

Jude Uzor, a resident of Okpoko, stated, “We are happy with the protest, but we are used to staying indoors on Mondays.” Another market leader echoed the sentiment, noting that fear of attacks led to the decision to remain closed in solidarity with the protest.

The police had heightened security in areas known for protests, and while some lone protesters were seen marching with placards, the overall atmosphere remained tense. Anambra’s police command reported that residents have increasingly favored dialogue and peaceful engagement in addressing their concerns.

As the day progressed, it became clear that the call for Kanu’s release continues to resonate deeply within the community, as many residents believe it is a cause worth supporting for their collective future.
