The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has issued a strong warning to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) amid Nigeria’s petition to FIFA over claims that the Leopards fielded ineligible players during their 2026 World Cup playoff clash. The DRC cautioned against Nigeria seeking victory off the pitch, emphasizing the importance of winning with dignity.
The NFF confirmed their formal challenge to FIFA regarding the eligibility of certain Congolese players who featured in the playoff that ended Nigeria’s World Cup hopes. The DRC triumphed over the Super Eagles on penalties in November to secure a spot in the Intercontinental Playoffs.
In a post on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the DRC dismissed Nigeria’s allegations, asserting, “If you can’t win on the pitch, don’t try to win from the back door. The World Cup must be played with dignity and confidence — not with legal tricks. Bring it on.”
The NFF’s protest aligns with claims that several Congolese players who switched national allegiance may not have fully complied with FIFA eligibility requirements, focusing on issues of dual nationality, which DRC laws do not recognize. NFF Secretary General Dr. Mohammed Sanusi stated, “We’re waiting… the rules are very clear, and we have submitted our petition.”
Opinions among Nigerian football journalists are divided on the strength of Nigeria’s case. Veteran journalist Oma Akatugba expressed skepticism, pointing out that the initial protest was filed by Cameroon. In contrast, respected journalist Osasu Obayuwana suggested that Nigeria has a strong case against the DRC.
FIFA has yet to respond to the petition. Should they rule in Nigeria’s favor, the Super Eagles may be reinstated for the Intercontinental Playoffs, depending on the timing of the matches.
