As the 2027 general elections approach, the internal dynamics of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are reportedly shifting under the influence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, while Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, struggles for influence within the party.

Sources allege that Atiku has financially supported efforts to consolidate control of the ADC as a platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Many of the ADC’s state chapters and leadership are now reportedly aligned with Atiku’s camp.

However, ADC’s interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, refuted claims of Atiku’s takeover, asserting that the party remains united in its objective to unseat Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress.

Key figures, including Obi and former APC presidential aspirant Rotimi Amaechi, have expressed interest in the upcoming presidential election. A leaked memo from the Obidient Movement raised concerns about the marginalization of its members in ADC decision-making processes, reflecting tensions within the coalition.

Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, stated that while Obi is committed to the Labour Party for now, he may consider joining the ADC in the future.

Insiders suggest that Atiku’s allies have significantly influenced ADC’s structure, with over 70% now reportedly loyal to him. This situation has raised questions about the coalition’s unity and its capacity to effectively challenge the ruling party in the upcoming elections.

Abdullahi maintained that the ADC remains committed to providing a level playing field for all candidates, emphasizing transparency and inclusivity in its processes. Meanwhile, the APC has dismissed the ADC’s potential to pose a serious challenge, citing internal divisions and a lack of coherent purpose within the coalition.
