The devastating flooding in Mokwa, Niger State, has led to a tragic increase in the death toll, now confirmed at 153. The floods, which struck last week, have caused widespread destruction, leaving thousands of residents displaced and in dire need of assistance.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his condolences to the families affected by both the floods and a separate road accident that claimed the lives of 22 young athletes returning from the National Sports Festival in Kano State. In statements released through his media aide, Buhari conveyed his deep sorrow, stating, “I am profoundly pained by the loss of lives due to the floods in Niger State and the tragic road accident in Kano State.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also voiced his concerns, criticizing both federal and state governments for their failure to effectively address safety and disaster management issues. He emphasized the urgent need for improved flood management strategies, especially as Nigeria approaches the peak of the rainy season.

Atiku noted, “The tragic accident that claimed the lives of 21 Kano State athletes represents a profound loss not only to their families but to the entire nation. We must proactively plan to avert further loss of lives in flood-prone areas.”

In Mokwa, local divers continue their search for additional victims, with reports indicating that bodies are still being recovered from the floodwaters. The Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, confirmed that two more bodies were discovered under a bridge, highlighting the ongoing tragedy as recovery efforts persist.

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State expressed his condolences to the families of the athletes, describing the incident as a devastating blow to Nigeria’s sporting community. He reiterated the need for safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) also mourned the losses, calling for resilience among survivors and urging governmental bodies to reinforce disaster preparedness and management protocols.
