Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called on party members in the National Assembly to uphold justice and resist actions that threaten Nigeria’s democratic integrity. In a statement released on March 20, 2025, via X, Obi expressed concern over what he termed a “deteriorating democratic process” in Nigeria.
He highlighted that the country has faced significant issues over the past 26 years, including a disregard for educational qualifications for electoral positions, widespread rigging, and the unconstitutional removal of elected officials. Obi emphasized that these actions have serious implications for democracy and the will of the people.
While he acknowledged that he had refrained from interfering in the legislative duties of the lawmakers out of respect for their independence, he felt compelled to intervene given the current situation. “I have refrained from interfering in your legislative affairs to allow you to focus on alleviating the suffering of the Nigerian people,” he stated.
Obi urged the lawmakers to act as true defenders of justice, rejecting any decisions that compromise democracy or undermine the interests of Rivers State citizens. “We must not allow ourselves to become instruments of injustice or contribute to the betrayal of the people’s mandate,” he asserted.
As the House of Representatives approved the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, along with the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara and other elected officials, Obi’s call to action highlights the ongoing struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria. The approval came via voice vote during a plenary session, indicating a significant shift in the political landscape.
Obi concluded by encouraging lawmakers to prioritize justice and the well-being of Rivers State citizens, reaffirming his belief in a better Nigeria as they navigate these challenging times.
