Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, has officially announced the formation of a coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 elections. This announcement was made during a press conference held on March 20, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre in Abuja.
Atiku confirmed that the coalition consists of various opposition political parties, signaling a significant political realignment as they prepare to contest the APC’s dominance in the next election cycle. The coalition’s formation comes in the wake of President Tinubu’s controversial declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which has been widely criticized by opposition leaders as unconstitutional and detrimental to democracy.
During the press conference, Atiku emphasized the need for a united front among opposition forces to effectively challenge the ruling party, indicating that the coalition aims to present a strong alternative to the APC. He and other stakeholders condemned the state of emergency imposed in Rivers State, describing it as an act that undermines democratic principles in Nigeria.
This coalition represents a strategic effort by opposition leaders to consolidate their resources and support in preparation for the 2027 elections, aiming to enhance their chances against the incumbent administration.
