Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government regarding the allocation of $1.07 billion budgeted for the health sector in the 2025 fiscal plan. He emphasized that funds earmarked for health must not fall victim to bizarre claims of misappropriation involving animals, which have previously marred public trust.

In a statement released on Sunday, Atiku called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to provide clear and transparent guidelines on how the intervention funds will be utilized. He stressed that accountability is crucial, asserting that every kobo allocated must be effectively used to bolster Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“Atiku remarked, “In recent years, we have witnessed absurd claims of animals like snakes and monkeys being blamed for the disappearance of public funds. Such claims must not overshadow the critical resources allocated to our health sector.”

He further highlighted the importance of maximizing every budgeted amount, especially given the challenges faced by Nigeria’s healthcare system, which has been exacerbated by reduced support in various areas.

Atiku criticized the Federal Government for not presenting a comprehensive framework outlining the expenditure of over $1 billion directed at primary healthcare. He pointed out that while investments in healthcare are vital for enhancing access to quality services, the government has a moral obligation to clarify how these funds will be spent.

“We have learned that the Federal Government intends to allocate a staggering $1.07 billion to the primary health sector, in addition to the N2.48 trillion proposed for health in the initial budget draft. Nigerians deserve transparency regarding these funds and a clear policy framework to accompany the budget,” he added.

Atiku’s statement underscores the need for diligent oversight and accountability in the management of public resources, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare, where the stakes are high for the well-being of the populace.
