A devastating petrol tanker explosion in Niger State has left many residents feared dead and others injured while attempting to scoop fuel from a spilled tanker. The incident occurred on Saturday morning at Dikko Junction along the expressway connecting Niger and Kaduna states.
According to reports, the tanker, which was speeding, overturned and spilled its contents on the road. As onlookers rushed to collect the fuel, the tanker exploded, resulting in severe burns and injuries to many of those present.
Bologi Ibrahim, Chief Press Secretary to Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago, confirmed the incident, expressing shock and urging caution among road users. The governor, who was inspecting government projects in Suleja and Tafa Local Government Areas at the time, described the explosion as “worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate.” He extended condolences to the victims’ families and called for enhanced security measures in the area.
The governor has directed relevant ministries and agencies to respond appropriately while ensuring the safety of residents. Eyewitnesses reported that several individuals were critically injured, and scores were burned, highlighting the dangers associated with such situations.
