Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has firmly stated that those implicated in the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which resulted in the death of 35 children, must stand trial.
Addressing state workers during the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service on Monday, Makinde underscored his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, irrespective of public sentiment or comparisons with other states.
The governor rejected calls for leniency, emphasizing that justice must prevail. He responded to claims that similar incidents in other parts of the country, such as Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory, did not lead to prosecutions, asserting, “Oyo State is not Anambra State. Here, justice will be served, and the rule of law will be upheld.”
Makinde noted that while the judiciary holds the discretion to grant bail, the trial process must proceed to ensure accountability. He reaffirmed that no individual, regardless of their status, is above the law in Oyo State.
Reflecting on the challenges of 2024, Makinde recounted the tragic events that tested the state, including the Bodija explosion and the Bashorun stampede, expressing hope for a more stable year ahead. He also addressed ongoing security issues, revealing that bandits from northwestern Nigeria had begun infiltrating parts of the state.
“We are aware of the threats, and we are taking proactive measures. Our security agencies are committed to ensuring these criminals do not gain a foothold in Oyo State,” he stated. Makinde called on traditional rulers and residents to collaborate with authorities by reporting suspicious activities.
The governor also hinted at upcoming developments concerning pensioners’ remuneration in light of the new minimum wage adjustments. He assured that negotiations would conclude soon, paving the way for improved welfare for retirees.
During the event, the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, and other dignitaries lauded Makinde for his workers-friendly policies, urging continued dedication from public servants.
Governor Makinde concluded by reiterating his administration’s unwavering stance on justice, security, and governance, promising to ensure the safety and prosperity of all residents in Oyo State.
