The Presidency has not responded to claims made by the family of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), regarding an alleged agreement with President Bola Tinubu for his release. The family asserts that Tinubu reneged on this promise after coming to power.
Kanu’s brother, Kanunta, revealed that he met with Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, during the 2023 presidential election campaign. He stated that the meeting, which took place in Abuja, was sanctioned by President Tinubu and focused on securing his brother’s release.
Kanunta expressed disappointment that the agreement has not been honored, stating, “Before the last election, I received a message from an ex-governor that Seyi wanted to see me. I agreed to meet with him on the condition that the overriding priority and hence the fulcrum of our discussion will be the release of my brother.”
He added that Seyi assured him the agreement would be binding, and the two discussed the importance of IPOB not interfering with the elections. Kanunta also noted that President Tinubu implicitly acknowledged this agreement during his campaign in Owerri, Imo State.
As of now, the Presidency has remained silent on these claims.
