The National Leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, headed by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has offered condolences to the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, and to the families of the victims who perished during a palliative distribution event on Saturday.
Reports indicate that 10 individuals, including children, lost their lives, while eight others were injured in a stampede that occurred on church grounds.
In a statement released on Sunday titled “A Heartfelt Response to the Tragedy at Holy Trinity Catholic Church,” Okoh emphasized that the victims were “not just statistics” but represented grieving families mourning their loss.
He pointed out that this incident is part of a disturbing trend, referencing two other recent stampedes in Oyo and Anambra States that highlight the difficulties of managing large crowds during charitable events.
Okoh urged Nigerians to unite in solidarity and compassion for the bereaved families, stressing that the collective concern following these tragedies is a reflection of our shared humanity.
The statement further noted, “This incident is part of a troubling pattern, as Nigeria has faced two other tragic stampedes this month. On December 18, a stampede during a Christmas funfair at a school in Ibadan resulted in the deaths of 35 children, leaving six others seriously injured. That event, intended to distribute cash and food to over 5,000 children, is currently under investigation to enhance crowd control measures.
“Just days later, another stampede took place during a rice distribution event in Anambra State, where at least 22 people were killed and 32 injured. These heartbreaking events underscore the urgent need for improved organization and safety protocols during charitable gatherings.
“In light of these tragedies, we must come together to support the grieving families. It is essential to listen to one another, share our feelings, and offer help in any way possible. This is a moment for compassion and understanding as we seek to heal as a community.
“As we reflect on these devastating occurrences, we urge all Nigerians to demonstrate kindness and solidarity. Let us support each other and work towards a society where everyone feels safe and valued. The empathy shown in response to this incident exemplifies our shared humanity.
“Together, we can honor the memory of those we have lost by committing to a hopeful future, where every life is cherished and where we can gather safely and peacefully, sharing the resources that our nation can provide for one another.”
