Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in a statement shared on Instagram on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
The family described the late actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” while appealing to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn his passing.
The statement read in part: “It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.”
The family also appealed to the public to give them space during the difficult period, saying, “We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”
Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most respected veteran actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film. He was widely regarded as one of the influential figures in the development of Nigeria’s modern film industry.
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs began his acting career in Britain after training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England. He worked with several repertoire theatres and appeared in British television productions as well as international films.
After returning to Nigeria, he became a prominent figure in the country’s entertainment industry and went on to build a successful career in Nollywood, appearing in numerous Nigerian and international productions.
His performances earned him several awards and recognitions throughout his career. In 2007, he won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
He was also honoured with the Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and received the MAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
In recognition of his contribution to the arts and entertainment industry, Jacobs was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2011.
Beyond his acting career, Jacobs was also involved in film production and helped shape the careers and development of younger talents in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
He was married to fellow veteran actress Joke Silva, with whom he had children and grandchildren.
Jacobs’ death marks the passing of one of the most recognisable faces of Nigerian theatre, television and film, ending a career that spanned several decades.
