The pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere has expressed concern over the worsening security situation across Nigeria, citing a series of recent attacks and killings in different parts of the country.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the group highlighted incidents including attacks on military formations in Borno State, killings in Plateau and other states, and abductions in several regions.
Among the incidents referenced was the reported killing of a senior military officer during an attack on a base in Benisheikh, Borno State. The group also noted assaults on communities in states such as Ondo, Kwara, Niger, Kaduna, Benue, Katsina, and Plateau.
Afenifere attributed the growing insecurity to multiple factors, including alleged internal sabotage within security agencies, collaboration between criminals and local informants, possible involvement of foreign interests targeting Nigeria’s mineral resources, and the role of some political actors.
The organisation called on authorities to intensify internal reviews within security institutions and address potential complicity that may be undermining efforts to combat insecurity.
It also recommended the deployment of modern surveillance tools, including drones and CCTV systems, to track the movement of armed groups and improve intelligence gathering.
In addition, Afenifere suggested engaging suspected sponsors of banditry to encourage disarmament, referencing similar approaches used during the administration of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The group stressed the need for urgent and coordinated action, noting that a comprehensive strategy involving accountability, technology, and community cooperation is essential to effectively address Nigeria’s security challenges.
