Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been granted temporary bail by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai.

The former governor was allowed out of custody to enable him participate in the funeral rites of his late mother, who died in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness. She was believed to be about 100 years old.

His son, Bashir El-Rufai, confirmed the development in a post on X on Friday night, expressing appreciation to supporters and describing his father’s detention as unjust.

The passing of the El-Rufai family matriarch has attracted condolences from prominent Nigerian leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.

In his condolence message, Tinubu described the deceased as a woman who lived a fulfilled life and raised a family that has made meaningful contributions to the country. He sympathised with El-Rufai, noting the deep pain that comes with losing a mother and praying for strength for the family.

Atiku also expressed sadness over her death, describing it as a painful loss while acknowledging her legacy. He prayed for her soul and for comfort for those she left behind.

Governor Sani paid tribute to her as a woman of humility, compassion, and strong moral values, noting her positive influence within her family and community.

Also reacting, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu said he was deeply saddened, recalling her warmth and motherly care while praying for her eternal rest.

The death comes barely a week after the passing of El-Rufai’s daughter-in-law, compounding the family’s grief.
