At least nine soldiers and one policeman have been killed following a deadly ambush by gunmen in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the attack, which occurred on Tuesday night in the Giro Masa community.
According to eyewitness accounts, the security operatives were responding to intelligence reports that armed men operating in the area had been traced to a construction company yard. Acting on a tip-off from residents, troops were deployed to secure the location but were ambushed before reaching their destination.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on the security team, leading to the deaths of nine soldiers and one police officer. In the aftermath of the assault, two civilians were also said to have lost their lives, while two military trucks were set ablaze during the attack.
Residents described the incident as chaotic and terrifying, with heavy gunfire forcing people to flee for safety. Many in the community were left in shock following the violence.
As of the time of the report, military authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Governor Idris visited victims at the mortuary and the Accident and Emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital Birnin Kebbi, where those injured were receiving treatment.
Describing the attack as barbaric, the governor expressed grief over the loss of lives and commended the fallen security personnel for their service.
“This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation. The Kebbi State Government will not relent in its efforts to protect the lives of its citizens,” he said.
He assured that the state government would cover the medical expenses of the injured and provide support to the families of those who lost their lives.
The governor also proceeded to the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment, reiterating his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across the state.
