An improvised explosive device detonated along a road near Woro in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State on Monday morning, killing a man and injuring at least one other, authorities have confirmed. The blast occurred as a vehicle passed over the device, instantly killing the male occupant; a woman travelling with a small child was also affected. The woman is receiving treatment in hospital and is reported to be responding to care, while the child escaped unhurt.

Officials say the device was discovered to have been planted some distance from the community, and preliminary reports suggest suspected insurgents—believed by locals to be members of Boko Haram—may be responsible. The local government and state spokesmen confirmed the incident on social media, but exact casualty figures remain unverified as rescue and investigation efforts continue.

The explosion has reawakened deep fears in Woro, which was already traumatised by a deadly attack in February that left multiple residents dead, homes destroyed and numerous families displaced. That earlier assault forced many to flee, disrupted livelihoods and intensified calls for a stronger security presence. With violence recurring, residents and local leaders are urgently appealing to state and federal security agencies to take decisive action to protect lives, secure communities, and prevent further attacks.

Authorities have begun preliminary investigations and security patrols in the area. For now, residents remain on edge as the community mourns the latest loss and seeks assurances that measures will be put in place to restore safety and stability.
