In a significant development, the Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended a suspect in connection with an alarming attack that targeted Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, along with members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, Edo State. This incident unfolded on February 24, shortly after Obi and key ADC leaders returned from a pivotal meeting at the party’s secretariat.

Eyewitnesses reported chaos as armed assailants unleashed a volley of gunfire directed at Obi, former Edo governor Chief John Oyegun, and various ADC chieftains, prompting widespread condemnation. The suspect, identified as Udeme Monday Stephen, reportedly issued online threats of further violence on social media shortly after the attack, escalating concerns among party members and the public.

In response to the violent incident, Obi expressed his outrage, emphasizing the need for accountability. “We will not let this incident go unanswered,” he stated emphatically during a gathering in Benin City. He underscored the importance of upholding democratic values, denouncing the use of terror tactics against civilians. His sentiments were echoed by ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi, who remarked on the intrinsic dangers posed to democracy by such malicious acts.

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo also condemned the incident, labeling it an internal party issue that spiraled out of control. He voiced his sympathy for the victims and criticized the infiltration of thugs into the region, insisting that such behavior would not be tolerated. “The peaceful nature of our state should not be exploited for violence,” he asserted firmly.

The attack has not only unsettled political circles but has sparked a broader dialogue about safety and political integrity in Nigeria. With threats against opposition figures on the rise, there are growing calls for authorities to take decisive action against such reckless violence. The ADC leadership has vowed to stand firm, advocating for the will of the people amidst attempts to intimidate them.
