Former presidential candidate Peter Obi on Monday joined a group of protesters at Nigeria’s National Assembly in Abuja, calling for urgent electoral reforms, including the real-time electronic transmission of election results.

Obi, widely regarded as a key political figure ahead of the 2027 general elections, arrived at the parliamentary complex alongside supporters and prominent activist Aisha Yesufu. The demonstrators gathered to press lawmakers to approve provisions in the Electoral Amendment Bill that would mandate the direct electronic transfer of results from polling units.

Protesters chanted slogans and displayed solidarity messages, insisting that electronic transmission is critical to improving transparency, credibility, and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

The protest attracted significant attention at the National Assembly entrance, as security agencies moved in to maintain order. Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other paramilitary bodies were deployed, with patrol vans positioned at strategic points around the complex.

Officers monitored the situation closely to prevent any breakdown of law and order as the demonstration continued.
