Former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa has publicly refuted claims that he has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a statement released on December 18, 2025, Bafarawa described the allegations as false and misleading.

Bafarawa resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in January 2025. He clarified that, despite being a founding member of the APC, he distanced himself from the party due to unresolved issues during its early formation. He emphasized that he has no intentions of joining any political party, including the APC. He reiterated his focus on youth empowerment initiatives, which he states is his primary aim after leaving the PDP.

Bafarawa attributed the rumors about his alleged APC membership to misunderstandings stemming from some of his supporters joining the party. He reassured that his withdrawal from political affiliations is a personal decision, separate from his supporters’ actions.

He indicated that his current efforts are centered around uplifting youth through empowerment programs and fostering innovation, distancing himself from partisan politics. Bafarawa criticized the notion that he could be a member of the APC without active participation in its meetings, calling the claims the work of mischief-makers.

Bafarawa served as Sokoto’s governor from 1999 to 2007 and has been a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. His earlier affiliation with the APC and later with the PDP reflects the shifting dynamics within Nigerian politics, especially as the 2027 general elections approach. His statement aims to quell speculations about his return to party politics and to reaffirm his commitment to community-focused initiatives rather than engaging in partisan conflicts.
