The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is calling on the Super Eagles to move past their disappointing exit from the FIFA World Cup playoffs and seize the opportunity to create a new narrative at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. This rallying cry was issued during a recent executive committee meeting held at the Sunday Dankaro House in the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
In a communique released after the meeting, the Ibrahim Gusau-led committee emphasized the need for the team to focus on their skills and potential, urging them to use the AFCON platform to showcase their capabilities. The NFF stressed the importance of thorough preparation to ensure a “hitch-free run-in” to the championship.
As part of their strategy to strengthen the national teams, the NFF has also directed its Secretariat to aggressively pursue quality friendly matches for the Super Falcons. The women’s team, known for their rich history in African football, is gearing up for the 14th Women Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026, as they seek to win their 11th title and secure a spot in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In addition to addressing the senior national teams, the NFF is focused on grassroots development. Following a review of the recent struggles faced by the nation’s youth teams in international competitions, the Technical and Legal departments have been tasked with establishing new guidelines for football academies. This initiative aims to enhance compliance with FIFA’s regulations and foster genuine grassroots football development.
