Former Governor of Abia State, Senator Theodore Orji, has officially announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a letter addressed to the PDP chairman at his Umuahia Ward 1, Orji made his decision public on Saturday. The senator, who served as the representative for Abia Central in both the eighth and ninth Senate, initially won the governorship election in 2007 on the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) platform but later switched to the PDP in 2011 following a protracted conflict with his predecessor, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu.

Orji secured a second term as governor while with the PDP and subsequently entered the Senate in 2015 on the party’s ticket, serving for eight years. Notably, his resignation follows a series of high-profile exits from the PDP, including his son, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, who left for the All Progressives Congress (APC), and his wife, who also departed the party earlier.

In his letter, Orji stated, “I write to formally tender my resignation from membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) effective immediately. This decision has been taken after wide consultations with family and associates. I appreciate the opportunities and experiences gained during my time as a member of the party.
