The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received applications from 43 media organizations seeking accreditation to cover the upcoming Anambra State governorship election. A total of 363 journalists and media personnel are expected to participate in the coverage of the election scheduled for November 8, 2025.
At a consultative meeting with media executives in Abuja, acting INEC Chairman May Agbamuche-Mbu stated that the media accreditation portal was opened on September 1, 2025. She emphasized the importance of the accreditation process as part of INEC’s election security and integrity framework, which includes scannable security codes for instant verification by security agencies and INEC officials.
Agbamuche-Mbu urged all applicants to complete their accreditation processes before the deadline of midnight on October 24, 2025, and highlighted the critical role of journalists in combating misinformation during the electoral period.
INEC has completed 10 of the 13 scheduled activities leading up to the election, with remaining milestones including the publication of the Notice of Poll on October 25 and the final day for campaigns on November 6.
The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Yahya Alhassan, called for deeper collaboration between INEC and the media to ensure credible elections. He emphasized that the media must play an active role in informing citizens and holding political actors accountable.
Looking ahead, INEC has confirmed that 2.8 million voters are registered to participate in the election, and the commission is committed to a transparent electoral process.
