The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it has not yet been formally served with the Federal High Court’s order halting the enforcement of tinted-glass permits. Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, made this clarification on Saturday in response to reports that the court had restrained the police from arresting or prosecuting motorists for having tinted windows.

On Friday, a Federal High Court granted an order in the case of John Aikpokpo-Martins v. Inspector-General of Police & Nigeria Police Force, directing the police to suspend enforcement of the permits until the substantive case is resolved. The order requires the police to maintain the status quo, preventing any action against motorists regarding tinted glasses.

However, Hundeyin stated on X that the police had not received the official court order. He emphasized the importance of providing a complete picture of the situation, noting that some parts of the ruling had been omitted in discussions.

The police had initially resumed the tinted permit scheme in April 2023 under the Police Specialised Services Automation Project after it was suspended in 2022.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the police will proceed in light of the court’s ruling.
