Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has advised ex-President Goodluck Jonathan against running in the 2027 presidential election, citing a changed political landscape. Speculation about Jonathan’s potential return has intensified amid discussions of a one-term Southern presidency and a new opposition coalition proposed by the African Democratic Congress.

In an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Sani pointed out the fragmentation and weakening of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which Jonathan once led to victory in 2011.

“Each time there is an election, the name of Jonathan comes up, but I advise him not to do that. The PDP he used to know is not the PDP now,” Sani said, highlighting that the party has members endorsing the current president and participating in coalitions.

Sani also dismissed the strength of the emerging coalition, arguing that its members lack ideological depth and are not distinct from President Bola Tinubu’s political philosophy. He emphasized that simply seeking to remove Tinubu without providing a viable alternative does not constitute a solid agenda.

“The people that constitute the coalition today are not ideologically different from the programmes which the Tinubu administration is prosecuting,” he added.

Sani’s remarks reflect concerns about the current political dynamics and the viability of Jonathan’s candidacy in a significantly altered political environment.
