NiMet Predicts Three-Day Thunderstorms and Rain Starting Monday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted thunderstorms and rain across the country from Monday to Wednesday. The weather outlook, released on Sunday in Abuja, highlights significant weather events expected in various regions.

On Monday, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in the northern region, with moderate rains expected over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are likely to impact Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa States. NiMet has also warned of a high possibility of flooding in parts of Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto during this period.

In the Central Region, light rain is predicted over parts of Niger State during the morning hours. By the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with light rains are expected over the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and Kogi States. The agency has indicated a significant chance of flooding in Plateau, Nasarawa, and Niger States.

For the Southern Region, cloudy skies are anticipated, with intermittent light rains affecting Ebonyi, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States during the morning. Later in the day, moderate rains are expected over Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Osun, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States, with a high likelihood of flooding in Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

On Tuesday, the forecast continues with morning thunderstorms and moderate rains expected over Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, and Kaduna States. Light rains are predicted for parts of the central region during the morning, with thunderstorms occurring later in the day.

Wednesday will bring morning thunderstorms with moderate rains to Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara States. Light rains are anticipated in parts of Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and Plateau during the morning, with continuous rain expected across the southern region.

NiMet has advised residents to exercise caution during heavy rains and to prepare for potential flooding. Drivers are urged to avoid traveling in severe weather conditions and to secure loose items outdoors. Farmers are recommended to refrain from applying fertilizers and pesticides just before the rains to prevent nutrient loss.
