Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has appointed Mr. Joachim Achor, an indigene of Abia State, as the new Accountant General. This decision marks a significant shift from the traditional practice of reserving high-ranking government positions for state indigenes.
Achor, who first came to Anambra for his studies, distinguished himself during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, earning the NYSC State Merit Award. His exemplary performance led to automatic employment in the state civil service, where he has steadily climbed the ranks to his current position.
Governor Soludo’s recent appointments reflect his commitment to a diverse and merit-based bureaucracy. The governor’s Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, emphasized that the selection process involved rigorous evaluations, including merit-based exams and personal interactions with the governor.
Aburime noted that this appointment challenges historical patterns of political patronage and ethnic considerations, signaling a move towards fairness and professionalism in governance. Achor expressed gratitude for the opportunity, praising the governor’s vision for prioritizing capability and national unity over regional interests.
