The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed support for Edo State Governor Monday Okpehbolo regarding comments directed at the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Speaking at the inauguration of the New Edo Line Transport Service in Benin City, Wike emphasized the importance of not politicizing security matters.
Okpehbolo had previously warned Obi to obtain security clearance before visiting Edo State, citing unrest during Obi’s last visit, which resulted in fatalities. Wike endorsed this stance, noting that prior notice from visiting political figures is crucial for public safety.
“All I am saying is, if you are coming, tell me because I am here to protect you,” he stated. Wike cautioned that mischief-makers could exploit political situations, potentially causing harm and placing blame on innocent leaders.
The minister criticized what he termed “political theatrics” by Obi, dismissing populist campaign promises as deceitful. He urged Okpehbolo to remain resolute in his leadership decisions, asserting that criticism is a part of governance.
Wike concluded by stressing that the ultimate measure of leadership is grassroots support, encouraging leaders to act in the interest of their constituents.
