President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University. The announcement was made during a special session of the Federal Executive Council held at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, to honor the late former president.
In his tribute, Tinubu praised Buhari as “a good man, a decent man, an honourable man,” emphasizing that his legacy of discipline and moral uprightness would endure. He acknowledged that while Buhari was not without flaws, his commitment to national service distinguished him from others.
Tinubu reflected on Buhari’s leadership style, noting his simplicity and humility, as well as his steadfastness against the temptations of power. He recognized Buhari’s quiet courage and his dedication to serving Nigeria.
The President also recalled their political alliance, which played a pivotal role in the historic 2015 elections, marking Nigeria’s first democratic transfer of power from one ruling party to another. Tinubu expressed admiration for Buhari’s modesty after leaving office, highlighting that he returned to his hometown of Daura without seeking to exert influence.
Following Buhari’s passing on July 13 at the age of 82, Tinubu thanked the Inter-Ministerial Committee and Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda for organizing a state funeral within 48 hours. He concluded his tribute with a prayer for Buhari, asking for forgiveness of his shortcomings and for his life to inspire future generations of Nigerians.
