A tragic boat accident occurred in the Gbajibo-Mudi community of Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State, resulting in the loss of 37 lives. The incident took place on Thursday around 6:00 p.m. and was reportedly caused by overloading, as the boat was carrying approximately 150 passengers when it capsized mid-river. The victims were returning home from the market at the time of the accident, and strong winds from an approaching storm contributed to the mishap.

Hon. Saidu Baba, the lawmaker representing the constituency, confirmed the incident and visited the community to offer condolences alongside local leaders. He noted that the tragedy was exacerbated by heavy rain and strong winds. Abdullah Danladi, the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, stated that the government would no longer tolerate the recurring tragedies associated with water transport. He announced plans to establish a committee to enforce safety measures, including mandatory use of life jackets and prohibition of night travel.

The Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Umar, also emphasized the need for increased awareness campaigns to ensure compliance with water travel safety protocols. This incident highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures in water transportation to prevent future tragedies.
