A tragic midnight flood in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has resulted in the recovery of 21 corpses, with many others reported missing. The disaster struck following torrential rainfall that occurred on Tuesday night, overwhelming the region and causing significant destruction.

The two communities most severely impacted were Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa town. Approximately 50 residential houses were submerged, with many residents caught off guard by the sudden floodwaters. In addition to the loss of life, numerous vehicles, including commercial and private cars, became trapped in the deluge.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as drivers and commuters struggled to navigate through the rising water, with immediate rescue efforts lacking. As of now, the bodies recovered include those of a woman and her two children, while search and rescue operations continue for the missing.

Local medical facilities, such as Mokwa General Hospital, have begun treating a woman and her children who sustained injuries during the incident. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed the severity of the situation, noting that the intense downpour lasted several hours and caused extensive flooding.

In response, the agency, alongside local government authorities and volunteers, is conducting search operations to locate survivors and recover additional bodies. As the community grapples with the aftermath of this disaster, the focus remains on providing support and assistance to those affected.
