Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, has expressed skepticism about the future effectiveness of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has recently been adopted by opposition leaders. While acknowledging this move as a positive sign for democracy, he doubts its potential impact on the political landscape.

Speaking during the Local Government Area Councilorship and Chairmanship election in Surulere, Lagos State, Gbajabiamila emphasized the importance of having a credible opposition to maintain a healthy democracy. He stated that the strength of any democracy lies in the presence of alternative voices capable of holding the ruling party accountable.

Gbajabiamila remarked, “There has to be some level of opposition in a democracy,” but added, “I am not sure where the coalition will go.”

He also praised the peaceful conduct of the local government elections and encouraged greater public participation in the democratic process, highlighting the significance of grassroots elections for good governance.

Regarding local government autonomy, Gbajabiamila noted that it is still being perfected for full implementation. He welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling on this matter as a significant advancement for grassroots governance, while emphasizing the challenges that lie ahead in its execution.

He expressed concern over low voter turnout in the elections, suggesting that many citizens may not fully understand the importance of participating in local governance.
