Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) best option to reclaim the presidency in 2027.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Lamido urged the PDP to actively court Jonathan back into its fold, describing him as “competent, qualified, and the most suitable candidate” the party could present.
“I think for the PDP now, they should try to woo him; he is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him,” Lamido said. He praised Jonathan’s governance experience, leadership style, and ability to work with diverse stakeholders, noting that no current PDP figure from the South matches his political pedigree.
Lamido added, “If we are giving the presidency to the South, I don’t see anyone in the PDP who can challenge Jonathan in terms of experience, listening ability, and partnership in governance.”
His comments come amid mounting speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to the PDP. Since leaving office in 2015, the former president has maintained a relatively low political profile, but reports suggest ongoing lobbying and behind-the-scenes negotiations about a potential 2027 run.
The development follows the recent resignation of former Vice President and perennial PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, which has triggered notable defections within the party.
Jonathan has yet to make any public declaration regarding his political plans.
