As the race for the 2027 general elections intensifies, significant defections have occurred in Borno State, with many members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The recent inauguration of David Mark, the former Senate President, as the interim national chairman of the coalition party has energized this movement.

Notable figures such as Idris Durkwa, a former governorship aspirant, and Sheriff Banki, a youth mobilizer, have led the exodus from the PDP. A recent dinner hosted by Mattawali Kashim Ibrahim Imam, a former PDP governorship candidate, attracted various political leaders who discussed the potential shift to the ADC.

Former presidential candidates Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have also joined the ADC after leaving their respective parties. However, Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has denied rumors that he would join the opposition coalition.

The defections reflect widespread dissatisfaction with the ruling APC under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Stakeholders have criticized the PDP leadership for losing support and acceptability due to internal conflicts. The youth leader, Sheriff Banki, attributed the defections to economic hardship and worsening insecurity.

These developments may signal a significant shift in the political landscape of Borno State as members rally behind the ADC, which they believe embodies a more inclusive and responsive governance model.
