No fewer than 17 members of the House of Representatives have defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

The defections were announced during plenary on Tuesday by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who read their letters on the floor of the Green Chamber.

The lawmakers attributed their decision to “unresolved crises” within the ADC, pointing to internal disagreements that have affected the party’s stability.

Those who switched parties include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, and Munachim Umezuruike, among others.

The development comes amid broader political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with tensions within the ADC reportedly driving members to seek alternative platforms.

Prominent figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso have also recently aligned with the NDC, citing the need for a more stable political environment and reduced internal conflicts.

Obi said his decision followed careful reflection on national challenges, stressing that his move was not driven by personal ambition but by a desire to contribute more effectively to governance.

Both Obi and Kwankwaso have urged supporters to prioritise unity and national development, while discouraging internal disputes and prolonged litigation within political parties.
