The Imo and Plateau State Police Commands have issued a ban on the sale, distribution, and use of fireworks and knockouts as the Christmas and New Year celebrations approach.

This decision is aimed at preventing injuries and ensuring public safety during the festive period. In a statement released by DSP Okoye Henry, the Police Public Relations Officer for Imo State, the command emphasized the total ban on fireworks and similar pyrotechnics. Violators will face arrest and prosecution, and enhanced security measures will be implemented for a peaceful festive season.

Similarly, the Plateau State Police Command announced its own ban, citing public safety concerns, with SP Alfred Alabo stating that the use of fireworks is known to cause panic and disrupt public peace. Both commands urge residents to collaborate with security forces by reporting any illegal activities involving fireworks and emphasize the role of parents and community leaders in spreading awareness about the ban. This ban is not unprecedented; during the 2024 festive season, several states also imposed similar restrictions to ensure safety and curb crime.
