Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has criticised the Federal Government over recent United States airstrikes reportedly carried out against terrorist targets in Nigeria.
Sowore described the development as a clear indication of weak and ineffective leadership, accusing the administration of President Bola Tinubu of lacking control over the country’s security affairs.
Reacting in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, Sowore questioned claims by Nigerian authorities that they were aware of the operation, which was said to have been conducted in collaboration with “international partners.”
His reaction followed announcements by U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, who confirmed that American forces carried out airstrikes on Christmas Day. Trump, in a statement on Truth Social, described the attacks as “powerful strikes” executed on his directive, noting that only the United States possessed the capability to conduct such operations.
Sowore, however, dismissed assertions that Nigeria gave informed consent for the strikes, insisting that the operation was carried out without genuine approval from Nigerian authorities.
“Although the Nigerian government now claims it was aware and describes the operation as a joint effort with vague ‘international partners,’ it is evident that the strikes were carried out without the genuine authority or informed consent of the weaklings masquerading as government under President Bola Tinubu,” he wrote.
He also referenced reports of a confirmed strike on a village in Sokoto State, arguing that the incident showed that the U.S. President neither understands nor genuinely cares about Nigeria or its citizens.
According to Sowore, the situation highlights a deeper national problem, stressing that Nigeria lacks the capable and sovereign leadership required to protect its people and territory.
He concluded that foreign military intervention cannot replace competent national governance, maintaining that only informed, tested, and accountable leadership can truly safeguard Nigerians.
