Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, presenting him with a copy of his celebrated work, Myth, Literature and the African World, during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil.

The meeting, which took place Monday in Brasília, highlighted the cultural dimension of Nigeria’s diplomatic outreach to South America. Soyinka, whose works explore African mythology, literature, and their global relevance, used the occasion to showcase Africa’s intellectual and creative heritage to Brazilian leadership.

The encounter underscores growing Nigeria–Brazil ties, which span history, culture, and economics. While President Tinubu’s engagements have focused on trade, investment, and bilateral cooperation, Soyinka’s presence added weight to cultural diplomacy — with discussions also touching on education, cultural exchange, and collaboration in multilateral forums.

Observers say the gesture reflects the increasing role of arts and literature in international relations, further strengthening the Nigeria–Brazil partnership.
